DynVar Ideal

DynVar Ideal uses simplified models and more theoretical approaches to improve the dynamical understanding of stratospheric influences. While the other Analysis Areas focus on specific physical phenomena such as the mean stratosphere-troposphere climate, intraseasonal variability, and climate change responses in the comprehensive AGCM simulations that are the main focus of SPARC DynVar. DynVar Ideal, on the other hand, will focus on using complimentary methodologies to elucidate the results of the comprehensive AGCMs. We will encourage DynVar Ideal participants to develop research subprojects that aim to explain and characterize the robustness of the comprehensive model results from the other Analysis Areas.

DynVar Ideal subprojects that have been proposed to date include studies of stratospheric control on the timescales of tropospheric variability, of surface-forced stratosphere-troposphere interactions, and of principal modes of variability of the potential vorticity distribution in the stratosphere and troposphere.
